Natural Selection

DESCRIPTION

The Natural Selection series is both a tribute to Charles Darwin´s discoveries in the field of the evolution of species as well as an irony of some of the conclusions that can be deduced from such discoveries: How come that if all species modificate through time to adapt itself at best to its environment, does man pretend to be the media that adapts to its needs and desires? Under this premise the early pieces of this series represent modified nature: fruits that grow with a tab, sheep with woll in patterned colors or trees with pencils as branches as soon as they sprout. Más adelante el autor introduce el concepto del retrato clásico asociado a la idea del personaje ilustre que uno podría encontrar a lo largo de tantas épocas de la historia del arte en innumerables colecciones y museos. However, the portrayed characters are not persons, but all kinds of different animals, non human primates in most cases. Sueiras´ work is characterized by constant decontextualisation of culturally assimilated concepts and a nature of existentialism charged with doses of mistery, melancholy and psychology, usually wrapped in a blanket of irony and/or humor.

Under this premise the early pieces of this series represent modified nature: fruits that grow with a tab, sheep with woll in patterned colors or trees with pencils as branches as soon as they sprout. Later on in the series the artist introduces the concept of classical portraiture related with the idea of illustrous characters one could easily find throughout so many different ages of art history and in so many collections and museums.
