SERIES
The series of works gathered under the title Natural Selection is both a tribute to the discoveries of the naturalist Charles Darwin in the field of the evolution of species and an ironic look at some of the conclusions that might be drawn from them: if all species change over time to adapt better to their environment, how is it that human beings expect the environment to adapt to their own needs and whims? Starting from this premise, the first works in the series show modified nature: fruit that grows with easy-open tabs or dotted lines showing where it should be opened, sheep whose wool grows already printed in colours, or trees whose branches produce pencils as they sprout. Later, the artist introduces the idea of the classical portrait, linked to the illustrious figures that can be found throughout so many periods of art history in countless collections and museums. The sitters, however, are not people but animals of all kinds, mainly non-human primates.
